Metallica Death Magnetic Tour 2009

I went to see the Metallica 2009 Death Magnetic show at Madison Square Garden Sunday night 11/15/09. The show was, in a word, AMAZING!!!

I haven't been impressed by anything the band has released since the Black album,  so wasn't too keen on seeing Metallica to begin with. A friend who I'd seen Metallica with in 1991 gave me a call when the tics went on sale, and I'm glad we decided to go...

Stupid Tone 2 Tricks With POD X3 Live

Line6 has given us so many options with the POD X3 Live compared to the POD XT Live. One of the biggest new options on the PODX3 is the dual tone feature. It's obvious that this gives you the ability to blend the sounds of different amps, but there are many other uses for dual tone.

Solution to Variax Tuning Problems

It's been mentioned many times on Variax forums that people have trouble keeping their Line6 Variax guitars in tune. Here are some steps I took to greatly improve the tuning of my Variax 500 guitar.

Amplification For PODXT or PODX3 Live

There are plenty of options for amplifying the PODXT or PODX3. Which way you go depends on what your needs are. Usually a flat frequency response amp like a keyboard amp or powered PA speaker will accurately reflect the POD's amp models.

Connect Volume Pedal In PODX3 FX Loop

The PODX3 introduces a new feature to the Line6 POD 'Live' series pedals - an effects loop. The loop can be used to insert external effects (like a Ernie Ball volume pedal) into the effects chain of the PODX3.

The loop can be set to 'Pre' or 'Post'. Setting the loop to Pre places the effects in the loop before the Amp & Cab, Post places them after the Amp & Cab.

Here's how I connected my Ernie Ball VP Jr. Volume Pedal to the PODX3 Live using the Effects Loop:

External Expression Pedals For PODXT / X3

Expression Pedals For PODXT or PODX3 Live:

Here are a few options that work as external pedals for your PODxt or PODx3 Live's 'Pedal 2' input.

The two external pedals I have used are the Line6 EX1 and the Roland EV-5.

4 Cable Method

The '4 Cable Method'

My son just purchased a used JCM2000 DSL50 to use with his 1960 Lead cab. I couldn't resist trying the four-cable method to connect the PODX3 to it!

Carrying Case For PODX3 Live

Case For PODX3 Live

Until Line6 comes out with the official carrying case for the PODX3 live, here are a couple of options you can use in the meantime:

The PODX3 measures slightly longer but not as wide as the PODXT was. Here are the dimensions:

54.5cm x 6.6cm x 23.4cm or 21.5" x 2.6" x 9.2"

First Gig With Line6 PODX3

I gigged for the first time with my Line6 PODX3 Live and Variax 500 on 11/17/07. The patches used were transfered directly from the PODxt Live without any changes. To me it sounded just about the same as the XT! The biggest difference was the Chorus effect, which just seemed to be more intense. I'll probably back off on the Chorus mix a bit on the patches that use it...
